The Bruin Store
.
Written by Michelle Woodstuff and Lindsey Willis, Authors
As many Brooke High School students know, the Bruin Store is back in business. In the early 1970s and 1980s, students had the opportunity shop at the Bruin Store for supplies and snacks. Back then, students could purchase soda and chips; today, students are offered healthier choices, such as fruits, granola bars, and crackers.
Students run the store during fifth and sixth periods and lunch. The students managing the store do so in place of a class and find it quite enjoyable. Their job is to set up and prepare the items, teatching them important business skills.
Mrs. Shute remembered how everyone enjoyed the Bruin Store when she attended Brooke High School. She thought that this could be an opportunity to award students for good behavior. When students show interest in school, are on time, and have good grades, they have a chance to receive Bruin Bucks. Bruin Bucks can be used in the place of money. However, if students do not have enough Bruin Bucks, they can use cash to buy what they need or want.
This store wasn’t started to make a profit; it’s all for the students to have more opportunities and a kind of reward. Mrs. Shute would love for students to be able to give suggestions on what they would like to see at the store. In this way students can have more control and feel that they are part of something that benefits them.
